Lessons In Living — Lesson #3: Silence is Golden

I’m really looking forward to sharing more here about the things I love — food, simple wellness, cross-stitch, and all the little creative things that make life feel good. Those things bring me joy, and they’re a big part of what this space is going to be about.

But before I jump into all that, let me stop for a minute and talk about something else — silence is golden.

This is something most of us already know, yet the benefits of silence are easy to overlook in a world that is constantly moving and talking.

Every now and then, though, life has a way of reminding us of the truth. It reminds us that we are human, and sometimes the wisest response is simply to review, reflect, and say nothing at all.

The Smartest Response Could Be Silence

I have older brothers and sisters, so having my own voice was important growing up. I had to be heard. Because of that, I can have a lot of opinions and sometimes feel the need to share them — even when nobody asked. 😶😂

And like many of us, if I see something that needs fixing, correcting, or improving, my first instinct is to step in and say something.

But every now and then I have to remind myself — silence is golden.

Maybe our words will help. We think we can make things better. Sometimes we even believe we have the solution to straighten things out.

However, that’s not always the case.

Often folks are just being messy or acting like know-it-alls. And sometimes speaking only adds more noise to something that really needs peace.

The Quiet Benefits of Silence

Silence can feel a little strange at first, especially when we’re used to reacting right away or feeling like we have to fill every quiet moment with something to say. But if we’re honest, there are real benefits to stepping back and letting a little quiet do its thing.

Some of the benefits of silence are pretty simple:

Clarity of thought – When things get quiet, our minds finally get a chance to slow down and figure out what’s really going on.

Emotional balance – Silence gives us a minute to cool off so we don’t say something we wish we could take back later. And let’s be honest… foot-in-mouth is not appetizing.

Better responses – Taking a moment before speaking can lead to wiser words and fewer unnecessary arguments.

Peace of mind – Sometimes what we really need isn’t more noise or more opinions. Sometimes we just need a little quiet.

A Simple Lesson From the Honeybees

I was thinking about honeybees the other day.

Bees have a pretty simple philosophy about life. They move from flower to flower collecting nectar and pollen — the things that nourish life and turn into something beautiful. From that work we get honey, wax, and the pollination that helps everything grow.

But while they’re out there doing that work, they also pick up waste along the way. And when that happens, they simply release it. No big announcement, no drama, no production. They just let it go and move on to the next flower. There’s probably a lesson in that.

As we move through life, we collect all kinds of things — kindness, inspiration, good moments, and beautiful experiences. But we also run into gossip, negativity, and situations that really don’t deserve our time or our voice.

Sometimes the smartest thing we can do is be a little like the honeybees.

Gather the things that make life sweet.
Hold onto what nourishes you.

And when you run into the waste along the way… just let it go and keep it moving.

Not everything needs a response.
Not everything needs fixing.

Sometimes, silence really is golden.
